Founded in 1946, the BMC Surgery Department is Central Oregon’s oldest and most respected surgical department offering the latest in surgery techniques. Our services encompass all aspects of general surgery, including abdominal, colon/rectal, endocrine/thyroid, pediatric, breast, vascular and cancer-related operations. We also offer innovative laparoscopic procedures featuring minimally invasive techniques, and leading-edge treatments for esophageal cases. Our surgeons perform operations at both St. Charles Medical Center and at the Bend Surgery Center. In case of emergency, we’re on-call 24 hours a day. 

 Bend Memorial Clinic surgeons, Dr. Darren Kowalski and Dr. Gary Frei, completed the Mastery of Breast Surgery certification.  The American Society of Breast Surgeons has announced 149 surgeons completed necessary cases for submission, while 656 are registered participants.  Drs. Kowalski and Frei are two of five surgeons in Oregon recognized, and the only surgeons in Central Oregon. The Mastery of Breast Surgery certification shows a commitment to improving breast care and is recognized by the American Board of Surgery as one of their ongoing quality assessment programs. In addition, Drs. Kowalski, Frei and Walling have completed breast ultrasound certification.
