The Clinic’s Gastroenterology (GI) Department was started in 1972 by Dr. Ivan Eastwood. Gastroenterology is the subspecialty of diseases of the digestive tract including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, pancreas and biliary tract. Hepatology is the subspecialty of diseases of the liver. In 1997, the GI Department moved its endoscopy facilities into the Bend Surgery Center adjacent to Bend Memorial Clinic. All procedures are now performed in this state-of-the-art facility or in the Medical Diagnostic Unit at St. Charles Medical Center.

Richard H. Bochner, MD

Dr. Bochner earned his Medical Degree at Baylor College of Medicine and graduated with honors. He served a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Utah after completing a residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford University. Prior to joining the Clinic, Dr. Bochner worked as a Gastroenterologist with Glenwood Medical Associates in Glenwood Springs and Ogden Clinic in Ogden, Utah. He also served as Chief, Department of Medicine for Columbia Ogden Regional Medical Center, as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Utah’s Department of Family Practice. Dr. Bochner is Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine.

Ellen Borland

Ellen Borland, MS, RN, CFNP

Ellen Borland, MS, RN, CFNP graduated with a Master of Science, Family Nurse Practitioner from Creighton University in Omaha Nebraska and also holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.  Before joining the clinic in 2008, Borland worked as a Nurse Practitioner in an active Gastroenterology practice in Virginia.

Arthur S. Cantor, MD

Dr. Cantor has been at Bend Memorial Clinic since 1989. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Cantor graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1977 and completed residencies at Oregon Health Sciences University in 1980 and St. Vincent Hospital & Medical Center (Portland, OR) in 1981. He completed advanced training in Gastroenterology at the University of Colorado in 2001. Dr. Cantor is also a member of the Crohn’s and Colitis Association and the American Gastroenterologic Association.

Gayle E. Riffle, RN, MS, ANP

Gayle is a Board Certified Adult Nurse Practitioner serving patients in the Gastroenterology department. Gayle received her MS and BSN degrees in nursing from the University of Portland. Prior to joining Bend Memorial Clinic, Gayle served patients at Corvallis Gastroenterology and Samaritan Internal Medicine, both in Corvallis, Oregon. She is also experienced in critical care and neuro-intensive care.

Sidney E. Henderson, III, MD

Dr. Henderson has been at Bend Memorial Clinic since 1991. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Henderson graduated from the University of California Medical School in 1977 and completed his residency at the University of Oregon Health Sciences in 1981. He received his training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology from the University of Pittsburgh, which remains the world’s largest center for liver transplantation. Dr. Henderson was the first physician to perform diagnostic and therapeutic biliary endoscopy, also known as ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatograpy) in Central Oregon.

 Sandra K. Holloway, MD

Dr. Holloway joined Bend Memorial Clinic’s Gastroenterology department in March 2006.  She received her degree from the University of Kansas Medical School.  Following graduation she completed her residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center.  She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.  Most recently Dr. Holloway spent her time caring for patients at the Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia.  When she wasn’t caring for patients she served on the Board of Directors at the hospital.  Dr. Holloway brings many years of experience with her to the Gastroenterology department at Bend Memorial Clinic.

Jennifer Semmelroth

Jennifer Semmelroth, PA-C

Jennifer Semmelroth, PA-C joined the Gastroenterology department of Bend Memorial Clinic in 2008. Semmelroth received a national certification as a physician assistant and holds a Masters Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Iowa College Of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology-Zoology from the University of Michigan. Before working at BMC, Semmelroth worked in primary care and internal medicine for nine years.
