Brian P. Desmond, MD

Dr. Desmond received his medical degree at the University of Utah’s School of Medicine and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of California in San Diego. Dr. Desmond offers comprehensive eye care with special emphasis on glaucoma, cataract, refractive surgery and eyelid surgery.

Thomas D. Fitzsimmons, MD, MPH

Dr. Fitzsimmons joined Bend Memorial Clinic’s Eye Care department in June of 2006.  After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Biology, Dr. Fitzsimmons went on to obtain his medical degree from the University of Michigan, School of Medicine.  He received his Masters in Public Health from the University of Texas, School of Public Health, and completed his ophthalmology residency at The Mayo Clinic.  Dr. Fitzsimmons traveled to Sweden to work as a Research Fellow at St. Erik’s Eye Hospital and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.  For the past several years he has been the Chief of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Clinical Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.  

Dr. Fitzsimmons is Central Oregon’s only physician with fellowship training in ocular plastic and reconstructive surgery.  He specializes in surgery of the lids, orbits, and tear drainage system.

Robert C. Mathews

Robert C. Mathews, MD

Dr. Mathews has been at Bend Memorial Clinic since 1987. Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Mathews graduated from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1983 and completed his Ophthalmology residency at OHSU in 1987. Dr. Mathews is trained in all aspects of medical and surgical eye care, including no-stitch cataract surgery and corneal transplants.

Scott T. O'Connor

Scott T. O'Connor, MD

Dr. O'Connor specializes in medical and surgical treatment of retina diseases. His most recent employment was with the Charles Retina Institute in Memphis, TN, where he served a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery. He received his medical degree from Hahnemann University of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Cole Eye Institute, The Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. He is Board Certified, has completed extensive research in his field and has been published in numerous medical journals.

Darcy C. Balcer

Darcy C. Balcer, OD

Dr. Balcer focuses on comprehensive optometry with an emphasis on eye primary care, contact lenses, pediatrics, low vision and rehabilitation, and vision therapy.

Darcy graduated magna cum laude from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. She also holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree from Wichita State University where she graduated cum laude.

   
   
 

Brian Arvidson, OD

Dr. Brian Arvidson is a native Oregonian who comes to BMC after completing his Primary Eye Care Optometry Residency at the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center.  He serves as Adjunct Clinical Faculty at Pacific University College of Optometry and maintains professional memberships in the American Academy of Optometry and the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Arvidson received his Doctorate of Optometry from Pacific University and his Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry from Lewis and Clark College.  Dr. Arvidson was awarded a National Eye Institute research fellowship at State University New York College of Optometry to study early detection procedures for patients with glaucoma.  Prior to starting graduate school, he worked at Oregon Health Sciences University in retroviral research which resulted in many professional publications.

Each of the last 4 years, Dr. Arvidson has traveled to Guatemala with Humanitarian Eye Missions and provided vision screenings and glasses for thousands of patients.  He is also active in a variety of local outreach activities including the Oregon State Special Olympics.
