Acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been practiced for over 2,000 years.   It is based on the concept that there is energy in the body that travels along channels called meridians.  Understanding a person’s baseline constitution provides the basis for treatment. Specific points along the meridians are stimulated by needling or pressure (acupressure) to increase the energy of the channel.

The main concept is that balancing and strengthening the body’s energy  will allow the body to heal itself.

What is a treatment like?  The needles used are very thin and much smaller than those used for injection.  The needles may be adjusted so the patient feels a dull ache-when the energy level is reached.  Approximately 10-20 needles are used per treatment. Usually the needles will stay in for 15-30 minutes-sometimes with electrical stimulation.

The most common side effects are mild bruising or bleeding.  It is recommended that someone try 3-4 acupuncture visits as there is often a baseline energy deficiency that needs to be overcome before significant healing can be noticed.

Generally people seek acupuncture for issues related to pain such as neck pain, back pain, arthritis, or headaches. However acupuncture can be used for a variety of conditions including digestive, menstrual, sleep, and mood issues.
