The holiday season is a time to celebrate with family and friends. Unfortunately for many, it also becomes a time for over-eating and weight gain. According to the National Institutes of Health, holiday eating can result in an extra pound or two every year. Over a lifetime, holiday weight gain can add up. The holidays don’t have to mean weight gain. Focus on a healthy balance of food, activity, and fun. By implementing a few simple tips, you can stay healthy through the holiday season.

  • Do not skip meals
    • Eat 4-6 small meals daily
  • Remember the 3-Bite rule when eating desserts
    • The first bite is the best, the second bite is not as good as the first, and by the third bite, your taste bud experience is over, put down your fork
  • Do not serve meals “family style”
    • Keep pots and pans away from the table to help avoid second helpings
  • Be prepared
    • Take snacks with you when you’re away from home to avoid going extended periods of time without eating
  • Get moving
    • Do some physical activity every day to help burn calories
  • Focus on friends and family
    • Enjoy the relationships throughout the holidays instead of focusing on the food
