Storing food in the right place in the kitchen can not only make your food last and taste better, but can also help protect you from foodborne illness.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says the refrigerator is the right place for:

  • Honey, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, bread and peanut butter.
  • Olive oil and nut oils are best kept in the fridge, to prevent them from turning rancid. If they cloud up in the fridge, returning them to room temperature before use should help them clear.
  • Cheese tastes best at room temperature, but it should be stored in the refrigerator until you are ready to eat it.
  • Butter should be kept in the fridge to avoid bacterial contamination. But take it out of the fridge before use so that it softens up and becomes easier to spread.
