David Downing
David G. Downing, PsyD, is a member of Summit Health’s Behavioral Health team. He received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Oregon State University in Corvallis. Dr. Downing earned both a Master of Arts degree in clinical psychology and his Doctor of Psychology from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH, where he also completed his dissertation, Cancer-related Masculine Threat, Body Compassion, and Prostate-Specific Functioning in Prostate Cancer Patients. Dr. Downing completed his predoctoral internship in geropsychology at Miami Veterans Affairs Health Care System and postdoctoral fellowship in palliative care psychology at the Portland Veterans Affair Health Care System.
Dr. Downing’s area of expertise is working with adults and elderly patients who are coping with advance illnesses, including metastatic cancers, end-stage renal disease, congestive heart failure. He also treats patients with chronic pain, sleep difficulties (insomnia), and other physical concerns. Dr. Downing has received advanced training in psychosocial oncology, palliative care, geriatrics and has experience in assessment services for patients with suspected neurocognitive disorders. In addition, he provides pre-surgical assessment services for patients undergoing spinal surgery and other complex medical procedures.
As a behavioral health provider his goal is to work collaboratively with patients, developing a trusting relationship where his patients feel comfortable discussing their emotional health and well-being.
Outside of work, Dr. Downing enjoys fishing, hunting, camping, spending time with family, jet skiing at Prineville Reservoir, and exploring new areas in Central and Eastern Oregon.
